Tiger Pan's Innovative Design Breathes New Life into a Century-Old Brand

Changyu CS, a new series of brandy products from China's prestigious winery brand Changyu, has been reimagined by designer Tiger Pan. The design, which pays homage to the brand's rich history while incorporating modern elements, has been awarded the Golden A' Packaging Design Award in 2019.

The inspiration behind the Changyu CS design was the brand's symbol, the letter "Z". This letter is not only a prominent feature in the brand's name when pronounced in Chinese and other main domestic dialects, but also represents the brand's founder, Mr. Zhang Bishi. The previous packaging was considered outdated and lacked this essential branding element. The new design, however, prominently features a capital "Z" on the bottle, making the brand easily recognizable and accentuating its history.

Changyu, with a history spanning over 120 years, is one of China's most esteemed winery brands. The unique properties of the Changyu CS design lie in its successful fusion of history and modernity. The letter "Z" on the bottle is not just a letter, but an illustration that tells the story of the century-old brand. It portrays a chateau, distillation apparatus, and barrels, subtly hinting at the brand's rich heritage.

The bottle's design is not just about aesthetics, but also functionality. The bottom of the bottle is shaped like a half-barrel, reinforcing the idea of cellar storage. The texture of the bottle is designed to mimic the smooth flow of brandy, while also ensuring a stable grip. The gradient technique used on the glass bottle not only attracts attention but also showcases the crystal-clear brandy inside.

The design process was not without its challenges. The team had to balance aesthetics with functionality and cost. The original idea was to use acrylic for the cap, but due to cost considerations, they opted for cork wood. To maintain the bottle's crystal and shiny aesthetic, the cork cap was covered with a plastic film. Despite these challenges, the final product is a stylish and elegant package that stands out on any shelf.
